They are right when they say “babies don’t keep” because I’m pretty sure I was just complaining about how Hazel NEVER slept and if she did, she NEVER wanted to nap anywhere but my arms. Those days seem so long ago. The days when it felt like I never got any sleep. Those days when I was first learning how to be a mom, it was all so new. But now, here I am sending that same anti-sleeping baby to her first day of kindergarten. How is it possible?
One of my favorite things about Hazel is that she loves to learn. Ever since she was little I remember doing mom school with her, she ate it up, knowing her ABC’s by age 2, learning to write and do all the things by the time she was 2 and a half. This girl loved -and still does love- learning. So, I shouldn’t have expected anything other than excitement from her for her first day of Kindergarten.
The night before her first day we laid her outfit out, along with her hair bow, and we went over the things she should do before she came to get me. So, this morning I was woken up at 6:15 -alarm set for 6:30- to a sweet girl all dressed (bow included) ready for school. She said “Mom! The light isn’t green, but it’s the first day of school and I don’t want to miss it!” *Heart explosions everywhere. She had the biggest smile on her face and you could see the excitement in her morning eyes. Oh, how I loved that Hazel girl.
She was logged onto her class by 7:43 -2 minutes earlier than early- and she patiently sat there, mentioning that her stomach was hurting -and those were her nerves. She did a wonderful job in class, participated, raised her hands, and was such a good student.
When class was over she came out of her room all hunched over with a sad look on her face.
“What’s wrong Hayes?”
“My teacher said class was over and I didn’t even get picked to say anything.” -Que the tears.
Hazel was so eager to be called on and was sad that class was over. She then asked if we could do more learning with Hanna and I happily agreed.
Hazel, I love that you love to learn. Always keep that, always want that. You are so smart, brave, and kind. You are my favorite girl -just don’t tell your sisters.
Love, Mom
