Tis the season for spring cleaning! Have you started on your to-do list yet? We have a neighborhood garage sale coming up soon so I’ve been going through the house like a fiend trying to get rid of all the things we don’t need.
Now that the cleanout is done I’ve got to start on the actual cleaning part, and this is the part we are teaching Hazel about. We typically have one day a week that we clean the house pretty good, and she’s been pretty good about participating most of the time. At first, it was hard teaching her because she hated it so much, but we learned a few tricks to keep her attention and make it more fun for her.
If you’re wanting to get your kids more involved in housework try some of our tips!
How to Teach Your Kids to Spring Clean
Let Them Have Fun: Hazel usually likes to start with the mopping, which means she brushes over the tile and doesn’t usually get the grime up, but that’s okay. If it’s something she enjoys doing she’ll grow to truly enjoy it. We like using our Libman Wonder Mop because it’s easy for her to control and use, and I love it because it’s easy to clean -just throw it in the washer. (And if you sign up for the Libman Company Newsletter you can save $3!)
Turn on The Music: Find their favorite song or soundtrack and blast it. Dance while you work and make it all less of a chore. This shows them that they can have a good time when they are working. It shows them that cleaning isn’t such a horrible thing after all.
Give Them a Chance to Try: If they never have a chance to try something new how will they ever learn? Dusting and mopping can be tricky for Hazel, but when she keeps practicing at it she learns that she can do it, she learns that she can progress and get better.
Be Patient: Don’t get frustrated if they do it “wrong” teach them the way you want it done and help them accomplish what you are looking for.
Be Positive: Show them lots of praise. Get excited when they finished a task and reinforce their positive behavior. Show them you really appreciate their hard work.
In the end, all you really need is a smiling face and a positive attitude. Children love to learn and they always love doing grown-up things, which is why Hazel loves to mop. It makes her feel big and teaches her the importance of doing housework.
