How do you teach your child to love books? They say if your child loves to read then statistically they will be smarter all round. Sign me up for yes-please! And if you asked me seriously about loving books, I would tell you that I wish I had read more when I was younger. It’s something I’m excited to teach my girls.
So, I guess then the questions is how do you do it? How do you teach your child to love books? Well, depending on the age of your child, it can be quite easy. Let me share with you the ways we are learning to love books around here.
How to Teach Your Child to Love Books
Schedule In Reading: Pick a time during the day where you only read books. Start out simple with ten minutes of reading and build up from there.
Read To Your Child: Having a parent read a fun story can be all the difference. Show your enthusiasm for the different books you have, this helps them know that books, and reading, are fun.
Find Books They Love: Bring out books filled with pictures and exciting things. Hazel loves books that she can relate to, so we love to get her books about her favorite tv show characters and princesses.
Go to The Library: Get your child a library card and let them pick random books off the shelf that they think they would like to read. Let them choose -you can give advice, but let them be the all around decision maker. This means that sometimes you’re reading Christmas books in April, and that’s okay.Â
Have Them Read to Themselves: Even if they don’t really know how to read they can look at the pictures and think about what is happening. I usually do this after I’ve read a few books to them first.
Stay Positive: If they aren’t interested find ways to get them interested. Have them tell you about different things they like to learn about and (like I mentioned above) take them to the library to check out books about that subject. There is nothing worse than forcing your child to read books they don’t like, that’s how you create a child who does not love books.
Give a Reward: When reading time is over, give them a high-five and move on to your next task. for us that usually means it’s time to start playing with our toys.
If you’re like me then having your child love to read is important to you. You want them to be successful, you want them to have all life can offer. Teach them to love reading and you’ll see their minds grow!

March 8, 2019 at 1:19 amGreat tips, Alyssa! I was struggling at some point reading books to my son, I did research and tried different methods, but I realized all he wanted to do was grab the book and read (blab) it to me. Now we role play, it works most days, but we are a work in progress. He is 3.
